We’ve just returned from our summer vacation to Puerto Rico. While processing the images from all of the cameras, I discovered that one of the cameras didn’t have the date set correctly.
Incorrect dates in the EXIF information of your images can cause all kinds of funny things to happen when you use image organization tools like Picasa or Lightroom.
There were over 400 pictures taken with this camera, and I was not about to manually edit the EXIF data of each file. So I found an awesome command-line tool to perform EXIF updates in bulk; ExifTool by Phil Harvey.

A little short of my 2009 goal of 12,000. Somehow I ended up with exactly 11,000. That is an average of 30 shots per day. Wow, could you imagine the cost of that with film?
This coming year looks very promising, photography-wise. I finally have the dSLR that I've bee wanting; Nikon D5000. Jennifer bought me a 50mm prime for Christmas, which I'm in love with that lens. I'll be picking up a larger zoom and some filters soon too.
I'm now in Summer vacation planning mode, and you can guarantee our destination(s) this year will have photography in mind.
The Nikon takes such good pictures, I actually find myself talking fewer shots now, especially with the 50mm. If not for shooting Trevor's track and cross-country meets, I would likely lower my 2010 (pronounced twenty-ten BTW) to 10,000. So instead I'll keep my guess at 12,000.
I'll be assembling my top 10 shots of 2009 soon.

If you Google “DIY Lightbox” you will get a bunch of how-to pages. Most are just WAY to complicated for the average shutterbug. Others are just too fragile and will likely get destroyed in short order. Nearly every one you find will cost more than you are likely to get out of it.
I noticed that my local WalMart has a portable lightbox kit in the camera deptartment for $49, which actually looks nice. But me being a cheapskate, decided that I can make one cheaper. So here you go.
- (2) Clip-on-Lights $2.50 from Target
- (1) Clear Storage Bin $7.50 from Walmart
- (2) Posterboards white and blue $1
- (2) BinderClips
Assemble like the pic! Nothing difficult.
The clear(ish) bin works to filter and soften the light. Best thing of all, is that everything stores in the tub when not used. Just remember to turn the dark background out before packing, so that the white doesn’t get marked.
